On 1 December 2019 the DPRT in partnership with the Trinity AME Church in Phuthaditjhaba held a prayer service for safer roads during the Festive Season and beyond. It was attended by the MEC, Honourable Sam Mashinini, and the Executive Mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, Councillor Masetjhaba Lakaje-Mosia, and comes in the wake of a horrific crash weeks earlier in which nine people lost their lives on the R74 road between Harrismith and Qwaqwa following a head-on collision involving two vehicles.
Rev. Tantsi of the AME Church said it is important that all stakeholders come together to pray for the safety of all roads users in the country. His sentiments were echoed by Councillor Lakaje-Mosia and in her message of support, Advocate Navilla Subaru of THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said prosecutors have taken a decision to ensure that harsher sentences are given to those who disobey road rules.
“We need to reach each and every member of our community, every church, every place of worship or prayer gathering and spread message of road safety,’ said MEC Mashinini.
