Graduation Ceremony for Traffic Officers at Lengau Traffic Training College

On 14 December 2022, the Lengau Traffic Training College in the Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT) hosted a passing-out parade for Learner Traffic Officers who have completed their training.

The duration of the training was 12 months. Cadets enrolled on 10 January 2022 and on Wednesday were awarded the diploma in Further Education and Training and Certificate (FETC) in Road Traffic Law Enforcement.

Six graduates from KwaZulu-Natal, KwaDukuza and Nougoma Local Municipalities are now qualified Traffic Officers and are prepared to commence their role as full-fledged law enforcers. With the festive season commencing, these new recruits will have a challenging initiation into the realities of the occupation.

In conclusion of the ceremony, Mr. Simon Moloi, Director of the Lengau Traffic Training College, encouraged graduates to go out and do their work with diligence. He said that they will encounter temptations while executing their duties but that they should never falter or bring discredit to themselves or the profession while in service. Discipline is of the utmost importance.  “The primary objective of Traffic Officers is to save lives and prevent accidents and injuries on our roads,” he said.

OTM 2022 CELEBRATED

The MEC for the Department Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT) William Bulwane officially launched the Free State’s OTM Campaign on Tuesday, 4 October 2022 in Bloemfontein.

He mentioned the importance of maintaining and reconstructing our provincial roads since many of them are not in good condition and announced the roads that are prioritized to be fixed soon and indicated that the R26 between Ladybrand and Ficksburg is at the top of the list.

Several events were held during the month such as an aviation expo, the handing-over of Shova Kalula bicycles to learners in rural areas and engagements with the taxi industry. The OTM campaign concluded with a road safety prayer service that was held at the Caleb Motshabi Stadium in Trompsburg on 27 October 2022.

The aim of the prayer service was to plead for safer roads in the province and to remind all road users of the importance of road safety. MEC Bulwane in his address said eight roads in the Xhariep District will be prioritized under the Vala Zonke pothole eradication programme and urged the community of Trompsburg to do their bit for road safety in our province by complying to the rules of the road.

7 June 2022:

On 2 June 2020, the Premier of the Free State Province, Me. Sisi Ntombela, and the Provincial Executive Committee, visited the R30 between Allanridge and Welkom. Recently the road was officially closed to traffic and the Premier and her entourage did an in situ inspection to assess its condition.

The Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT) has issued countless statements during the past few weeks to caution road users about the closure of the R30 and also provided information on alternative roads that can be utilised. Additional warning and road signs were also erected along the road to notify motorists well in advance of the closure and dangerous driving conditions.

Despite all these efforts, the department has experienced bad driver behaviour that resulted in fatalities. It is with utter dismay to mention that, although the sign boards were installed in an effort to save lives, vandals now target these sign boards and deface or remove them. These selfish actions and total disregard of the seriousness of the situation put lives at stake.

The Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State Province will not be held responsible or liable for any direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential damage, injuries or loss of life arising from the illegal use of the R30 Road after it was officially closed.

26 May 2022:

The R30 between Allanridge and Welkom remains closed.

25 April 2022:

The Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT) hereby notifies motorists that the R30 between Allanridge and Welkom has been officially closed until further notice.

The R30 has been flooded several times during the rainy season and continuously repaired but a number of fatal accidents happened around the area. In the most recent incident on Saturday 23 April 2022, six people died and five were seriously injured when a white Iveco 22-seater midibus that was travelling on the R30 from Bothaville overturned at a low bridge site and plunged into the adjacent dam about 5km from Allanridge.

The DPRT is concerned about the lives of our road users and, as the R30 is deemed not safe to negotiate, requests motorists to make use of the following alternative routes:

  • Vehicles travelling between Allanridge and Bothaville should use of the S1075 secondary road and the R719.
  • If you are travelling between Welkom and Kroonstad, the R34 is the indicated route.
  • Motorists travelling to Orkney in the Northwest should use the R76 via Viljoenskroon.

Additional measures are being introduced to make the alternative routes safe and extra road traffic signs will be erected on the R30 to ensure that motorists are aware of the situation.

For the sake of everyone’s safety, the department pleads with motorists to cooperate in this regard and not to unlawfully remove road signs and illegally make use of the R30.
